Palliative and End-of-Life Care at CAMA

At CAMA, our palliative care program focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for every resident. Our goal is to ensure that each resident’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs are met, allowing them to live as fully and comfortably as possible.

Honouring Resident Wishes

We encourage residents to have meaningful conversations with their families and substitute decision-makers about their care preferences, especially in the event they are unable to speak for themselves. These discussions help guide our care team in honouring each resident’s values, wishes, and goals of ca

A Collaborative Team for Comfort-Focused Care

When family members decide together with our Nurse Practitioner that the goals of care for their loved one will be comfort care, the focus of care is relieving pain and discomfort while promoting calm and peace. Nursing and medical staff regularly assess symptoms and adjust care plans to support the residents’ comfort and well-being.

We offer comprehensive end-of-life support that addresses physical comfort as well as emotional, social, and spiritual needs. This is provided by an interdisciplinary team working closely together to support residents and their families. This team includes Nurses, Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Dietary staff, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Recreational Therapists, and our Spiritual Care Ministers. Together, we provide compassionate, resident-centered care tailored to individual needs.

Supporting Families

Families have an essential role in end-of-life care, and are kept informed and involved throughout the palliative care journey. Our care team will communicate openly about changes in condition, care needs, and comfort measures, and will answer questions as they arise.

An end-of-life care comfort cart is placed at the resident’s bedside and includes thoughtful items such as creams, lotions, mouth-care supplies, an iPad for music, entertainment, education regarding end-of-life care and CAMA’s process after your loved one dies, as well as multi-faith support resources, a CD player, an electric candle, grief and spiritual support reading materials and resources, and other comfort items. Families are encouraged to bring personal belongings to help create a familiar and peaceful environment, and as you visit to share the words you would like to with your loved one as hearing is the last sense to go before a person passes.

A cot is available for family members who wish to remain close to their loved one during this journey. You can receive meals from CAMA during the end-of-life journey by telling a staff member when you would like one.

A white dove placed on the resident’s door at this time signals to staff and visitors the need for privacy, quiet, and respect. Our Spiritual Care Ministers are available at any time to offer spiritual care and support through conversation, presence, and prayer as desired, respecting individual beliefs and preferences.

After-Death Care

Following a resident’s passing, CAMA holds a Code Purple—a brief and respectful ceremony held at the front entrance of the Home. This ceremony allows staff to pay their final respects, honour the life of the resident, and grieve the loss of this person together.

Our Commitment

It is our honour and privilege to provide compassionate palliative and end-of-life care. We are grateful to our residents and families for allowing us to journey alongside them during this meaningful time. We are here to support you in your journey.
